"Viscoelastic Flow Dynamics: from Theory to Mechanisms" will be held at the forum.

The academic conference on "Viscoelastic Flow Dynamics: From Theory to Mechanisms," organized by Assistant Professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, Professor Liu Nansheng from the Department of Modern Mechanics at the University of Science and Technology of China, and Professor Hu Xianpeng from the Department of Mathematics at City University of Hong Kong, will proceed as scheduled at the Tsinghua Sanya International Mathematics Forum from January 7th to January 13th, 2024. This conference will be attended by 49 mathematicians from various domestic universities and research institutions. Discussions during the conference will revolve around mathematical research pertaining to viscoelastic fluids and their physical mechanisms, featuring a total of 35 related academic presentations.

Theme

The conference will explore the theme of "Theory and Mechanisms in Viscoelastic Flows," with a specific focus on the nonlinear dynamics of viscoelastic fluids. These fluids are ubiquitous in both natural phenomena and engineering processes and hold significant practical value. Understanding the dynamics of viscoelastic fluids has a rich history and encompasses a diverse array of research topics, presenting a significant challenge for theoretical, numerical, and experimental researchers. Recently, the field has witnessed a surge in new discoveries and discussions, including novel viscoelastic flow instabilities and mathematical properties of the viscoelastic equations, highlighting the need for researchers to come together to exchange ideas and explore future directions. The goal of this workshop is to emphasize the importance of mathematical research and physical mechanisms in viscoelastic flows. Specifically, the workshop will cover various topics, such as the application of dynamical systems approaches to comprehend the flow dynamics of viscoelastic fluids, the existence and smoothness of solutions to the viscoelastic equations, and the observation of nonlinear elastic waves in viscoelastic experiments and how they can be modeled mathematically.

Agenda

1)Recently-discovered viscoelastic flow instabilities and bifurcations.

2)Mathematical properties and modeling of viscoelastic equations.

3)New observations in experiments on viscoelastic flows.

Significance

The objective of this workshop is to facilitate collaboration between mathematicians, numerical researchers and experimentalists who are studying the dynamics of viscoelastic flows. Recent developments in this field have highlighted the need for a platform where researchers of different backgrounds can exchange ideas and explore future directions. World-renowned scientists working on the mathematical, numerical and experimental viscoelastic flows will be invited and junior researchers (PhD students, postdocs) will also be encouraged to participate the workshop. This will help the development of this discipline domestically and internationally. In short, the workshop will provide an opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of the research landscape and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in viscoelastic flow dynamics, which is an essential area of study of nonlinear problems in fluid mechanics.
